PROJECT OVERVIEW

SWISS FILMS is a national agency working to increase the exposure of Swiss filmmaking through travel funding, subtitling facilities, networking events and film festivals. Our microsite extends the brand intent by elevating the film crew members and their craft to entice future collaborators to connect beyond the site.

CONTENT STRATEGY

Equalising film crew roles through glorification

To reinforce the impressiveness of each crew and craft, I led the content strategy by creating a tone that expresses grandeur in four categories: “Maestros” for directors and writers, “Sound Prodigies” for the sound crew, “Visual Virtuosos” for lighting, props and camera crew, “Masters of Disguise” for make-up and costume design.

To reinforce the impressiveness of each crew and craft, I led the content strategy by creating a tone that expresses grandeur in four categories: “Maestros” for directors and writers, “Sound Prodigies” for the sound crew, “Visual Virtuosos” for props and camera crew, “Masters of Disguise” for make-up and costumes.

Tone and immersive full-bleed videos to reinforce grandeur

I extend the tone by including punchy one-liners in our full bleed videos such as “A Mastermind at faking injuries” or “24 years, 16 directed movies” to highlight striking career facts on the creators and amplify their presence for future collaboration.

Fostering continuous discovery through a flexible grid

The visitor can hover to reveal select achievements and click to reveal 2 types of content: collaborations to show artist versatility across roles and teams, and processes to understand the intent behind the work.

For collaborations, I introduced the idea of surfacing the differing roles in the industry to reinforce the credibility of each creator’s work. The team then collaborated to execute the idea seamlessly.

The process pop-ups dissect each creator's approach. For the people directing, and writing, we look at their storytelling methods and vision. For Pierre Monnard an interview is appropriate because he is established in the film industry but it can vary.

Tailoring content to the diverse of roles in production

Processes look different across categories. Unlike maestros, we approach gaffers through static film stills and sound prodigies through sound creation. Specialties matter when forming a team with which to collaborate. This pushes behind-the-scenes' processes at the forefront of film production.

Understanding the microsite as a teaser

The videos are trimmed to a minute, the chosen film stills dissect only select parts of a film and the awards are a fraction of the creator's achievements. The bottom right arrow leads to the creator's portfolio which collaborators can use to connect directly.

FUTURE CONSIDERATION

One struggle that we had was finding words to encompass the categories inclusively. We change "lighting gods" to "visual virtuosos" but it still feels wordy. Moreover, the saturated blue of the pop-ups conflicts with the content's display. I propose a more neutral composition using white to make the content stand out better.

REFLECTION

Develop a genuine interest, and question everything

This project was meaningful because it was a rare opportunity to discuss the theme of amplifying unheard voices, a theme I try to advocate for across my work beyond academic papers. Being able to take that angle in a design project was refreshing.

Additionally, I undertook a leadership role in project management and discussion. As an overthinker, it was valuable to learn to advocate for my choices, constantly question things, and make faster decisions. Our initial indecisiveness overwhelmed the team in the project's first half. By questioning not only the work but also how we approach decisions, we collaborated better in the latter half of the project.
